The number of people using e-cigarettes globally has seen a dramatic increase from 7 million in 2011 to 41 million in 2018.
It is also estimated that the number of adults who vape will reach 55 million by the year 2021.
So, Why the Large Increase?
According to experts, part of the reason in this surge in use is the evolution of the e-cigarette device themselves. E-cigarettes have become a more efficient way to consume nicotine compared to regular cigarettes. The devices have become very small and discreet, don’t create large clouds as previous devices would, can be used anywhere and have a wide variety of flavours. New devices such as Juul resemble the physical feeling of a cigarettes on the throat and use nicotine salts to deliver high concentrations of nicotine to the brain, much like a cigarette would. E-cigarettes can also be conveniently purchased at mall kiosks, convenience stores, websites and retail outlets, making them desirable to youth and young adults. The use of E-cigarettes has also seen an increase in popularity for adults as a tool to quit smoking.
